Osteopatologias e alterações dentárias em Otaria byronia (Pinnipedia, Otariidae) da costa do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Braunn,Patrícia Rodrigues; Ferigolo,Jorge.
Bone diseases and tooth alterations in 47 specimens of Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820), from southern Brazilian coast, were analized. Tooth wear and the associated bone pathologies were determined, as well as their percentuals. The main infection was osteomyelitis associated with tooth alterations, such as fractures and attrition, both of them exposing the pulp chamber. Tooth attrition increases with age, favoring fractures and their complications, including osteomyelitis, causing a high frequency of them in specimens presenting more pronounced tooth wear. In one specimen tuberculosis was found in the maxilla, perhaps primarily pulmonary. The high frequency of enamel hypoplasia might reflect cyclic food deficit. Infections and tooth fractures might be...

Osteological alterations in the tucuxi Sotalia fluviatilis (cetacea, delphinidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fettuccia,Daniela de C.; Silva,Vera M. F. da; Simões-Lopes,Paulo C..
We present a description of osteological alterations observed in the tucuxi, Sotalia fluviatilis (Gervais, 1853) from a sample of 43 specimens. Fractures were the most frequent alterations in the sample (16%), occurring in various regions of the skeleton such as the ribs, hyoid apparatus, transverse and neural processes of vertebrae and scapula. We observed three individuals with ankylosis between the cervical vertebrae and two individuals with morphological changes (cranio-caudally elongated hemal arch and flattened cranial margin of the scapula). The only observed pathology was a case of osteomyelitis in the left dentary, which caused the loss of teeth, deformation of the associated alveoli and the formation of a medial fistula (lingual) for drainage of...

New Caledonian shrimp farming feasibility studies started in the mid-seventies. Today ca. 2000 tons of Litopenaeus stylirostris, introduced in 1978, are semi-intensively produced each year. Since fifteen years, production has been impacted by two seasonal vibriosis, the “Summer” syndrome caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo in relation to pond bottom and water column quality, and the “Winter Syndrome” caused by Vibrio penaeicida in relation to drastic temperature drops . With the ambition of elucidating processes possibly leading to mortality outbreaks in ponds, Ifremer has been conducting a research program since 2003 under the DESANS project (2003-2006) and the present DEDUCTION project, equally funded by the South and North Provinces and by the Government...

Use of molecular tools for mollusc disease diagnosis ArchiMer
Berthe, Franck; Burreson, Eugene; Hine, Mike.
Recently, an increasing number of research teams are engaged in developing DNA-based diagnostic techniques for mollusc pathogens. These techniques are slowly moving from development in specialised laboratories for research purposes, to routine application and are expected to find an increasing use in routine disease monitoring programs in mollusc aquaculture and in efforts to prevent the spread of pathogens within and between nations. Considering the probable development and interest in these diagnostic techniques, the potential for wide applications in aquaculture and the inherent problems currently associated with their use, it appears necessary to address these issues.

Diagnosis of oyster herpes-like virus: development and validation of molecular, immunological and cellular tools "VINO" - Final Report 4th January 1999 to 3rd January 2002 ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Davison, Andrew; Xhonneux, Florence; Dorange, Germaine; Culloty, Sarah; Novoa, Beatriz; Dixon, Peter.
Little information is available on viral infections that affect bivalve molluscs. Such a lack of data is due ta a certain inadequacy of the diagnosis methods that are employed when massive mortality events occur. Most laboratories involved in mollusc pathology still analyse samples through light microscopy. World-wide, there is thus currently a lack of information concerning the occurrence of bivalve herpesvituses. This is probably due to the lack of suitable diagnostic tools. The basic method for identification and examination of suspect samples is predominantly histopathology. This enables the identification of any cellular changes, but is not conclusive identification of bivalve herpesviruses. This technique doesn't allow, by itself, to detect viruses...

Created in 1986, the REPAMO network (Network of mollusc pathology), is a national zoosanitary surveillance network of shellfish health status along the French coasts. Its activities are in keeping with two European Directives, 91 /67/EEC and 95/70/EC and are a patt of the institutional tasks ofIfremer. The aims of the network are to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens and to survey the evolution of notifiable pathogens already present in France. The network focused on the survey of listed diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis of flat oyster) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X). In 2004, no sample couId be analysed to these two areas because of the difficulty to obtain flat oysters (sparse oyster beds,...

Diagnosis of oyster herpes-like virus: development and validation of molecular, immunological and cellular tools "VINO" - First Periodic Progress Report 4th January 1999 to 3rd January 2000 ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Davison, Andrew; Xhonneux, Florence; Dorange, Germaine; Culloty, Sarah; Novoa, Beatriz; Dixon, Peter.
The aim of the programme is to develop specific tools for diagnosing herpes-like virus infections in bivalves and to validate these reagents by using them in different European laboratories involved in shellfish epidemiological surveys. This will done using techniques developed by the partners to characterise viruses by studying their genomes and immunologically reactive proteins, to cultivate oyster cells and vertebrate cell lines and to perform epidemiological surveys among bivalves. The programme objectives are: 1 - Obtaining the complete oyster herpes-like virus DNA sequence with determination of the genome structure. 2 - Comparing oyster herpes-like viruses with other viruses belonging to the Helpesviridae family on the basis of sequence data and...

Essai de culture de l'huître plate Ostrea edulis dans le bassin d'Arcachon. Résultats préliminaires ArchiMer
Robert, Rene; Pichot, Yves; Comps, Michel.
From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Regardless of the type of farming, Marteilia refringens infection was very quick and may have been related to climatic bay water...

Recommendations for evaluation of the health status in cultured and wild shellfish: Perkinsus olseni infestation in clams as an example ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Arzul, Isabelle; Garcia, Celine; Soudant, Philippe; Francois, Cyrille; Leite, R. B.; Cancela, M. L.; De Blas, I..
Infectious diseases in exploited shellfish population cause economical problems world-wide. The characteristics of the disease in the population -i.e. origin, frequency, distribution, development- need to be well known to set up appropriate measures for protection and restoration of shellfish population health. The investigation of disease in a population is the basis of epidemiology. Quantitative investigations include studies, survey, surveillance with specific sampling strategies according to the objectives. European clams (Ruditapes decussatus) and Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), two commercially valuable species, are infected by the protozoan Perkinsus olseni. This pathogen has been associated with epizootic outbreaks involving in heavy...

This influence of salt media on different aspects of biological cycle and on most common pathogenic agents of Turkish freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus is investigated survival and growing of juveniles O super(+) and intermediary individuals 1 super(+) are also studied. Total osmotic metabolism and reproduction, have been recorded. It appears that youngest individuals are particularly sensitive to low salinities (7 ppt.). Intermediary ones are more resistant nevertheless salinity does not improve neither survival nor growing. Copulation, laying and pleopod egg fixation are particularly affected by salt waters. The only promising application of salinity parameter on astaciculture could be whether prophylactic or curative treatment with concentrated...

Analyse bibliographique: historique de l'huître plate, Ostrea edulis, et la Bonamiose, maladie due au protozoaire Bonamia ostreae ArchiMer
Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie.
Oyster productions represent an important part of the french aquaculture. However, diseases are considered as the first limiting factors for the development of this activity around the world. Two exemples point out this problem for the french flat oyster production: Marteiliosis, the disease of the digestive gland, caused by Marteilia refringens, and Bonamiosis, the hemocytic disease, caused by Bonamia ostreae. This report proposes a bibliography analysis of major results obtained for Bonamiosis studies.

Plan de relance de l'huître plate Ostrea edulis L.. Travaux 1985. ArchiMer
IFREMER.

Kentouri, M; Divanach, P.
In aquaculture and particularly during fish larval rearing when the time between moment of stress application and the non-return point acquisition is very limited, criteria which may provide health state and stock evolution are of great importance. Now, in stress responce chronology, the specific behavioral scheme modification is first noted. This early identification, associated with initial conditions restoration, generaly do not involve after effects. Ethological knowledge beeing the basis of this for-casting strategy, the authors define in this study a simplified behavioral scheme of four sparid larval species in a range of physiological conditions.
